Professional Bike Fitting Rules

Standover Clearance

Straddle the top tube with both feet flat on the floor. Road bikes require 1 to 2 inches (2.5โ€“5 cm) of crotch clearance; mountain bikes require 2 to 4 inches (5โ€“10 cm) for emergency dismounts on trails.

When Between Two Sizes

If between sizes: choosing the smaller frame gives nimbler handling and lower weight (can adjust saddle height and stem length); choosing larger gives greater high-speed stability.

Saddle Height Formula (LeMond Method)

Multiply your barefoot inseam in cm by 0.883 to get the distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle along the seat tube.
