World Power Plug Types Meaning
Packing for Europe, the UK, Japan, or Australia? Decode Type A, B, C, G, and I wall sockets, 110V vs 230V voltage traps, and adapter safety.
Crucial Warning: Adapter vs Voltage Converter (Donโt Fry Hair Dryers!)
A cheap plastic travel adapter ONLY changes the pin shapeโit does NOT change the voltage! Modern laptop and phone chargers are dual-voltage (100Vโ240V) and work worldwide safely. However, standard American hair dryers, curlers, and blenders are built strictly for 110V; plugging them into a 230V European Type C or UK Type G outlet with a basic adapter will instantly catch fire or blow a fuse.
Type C Socket
2 round pins (Europlug)The universal "Europlug" used across virtually all of continental Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. Fits seamlessly into Type E, F, J, K, and N sockets.
Type G Socket
3 rectangular pins in triangle (British 13A)The famous heavy-duty British 3-pin fused plug. Considered one of the safest plugs in the world, with insulated prong bases and automatic socket shutter gates.
Type A Socket
2 flat parallel blades (US / Japan)The standard North American ungrounded plug. Notice the two blades: modern US Type A plugs are polarized (neutral blade is wider than the hot blade).
Type B Socket
2 flat blades + 1 round grounding pinStandard North American 3-prong grounded plug (NEMA 5-15). The round bottom pin connects directly to safety earth ground.
Type I Socket
2 or 3 flat pins in V-shape angleInverted V-shaped angled flat pins with a vertical ground pin. Mandatory across Australasia and the South Pacific.
Type F Socket
2 round pins + side grounding clips ("Schuko")The German "Schuko" (Schutzkontakt) plug with dual metallic side clips that establish ground contact before the main pins deliver power.
Type J Socket
3 round pins in flattened triangleThe Swiss national 3-pin plug. Slightly offset center grounding pin.
Type D & M Socket
3 large round pins in triangle (Old British)Large round-prong plugs based on early 20th-century British standards. Type D is 5A (small) and Type M is 15A (large heavy appliances).
