Sandpaper Grit Chart & Guide

Decode abrasive grit numbers from aggressive stock removal (36โ€“80) to satin wood smoothing (120โ€“220) and mirror automotive wet sanding (600โ€“2000).

Select Sanding Grit Level:
Abrasive Grading Standard

Medium (100 โ€“ 150 Grit)

FEPA: P100 โ€“ P150Removal: Moderate
๐Ÿ”จ Recommended Tasks & Applications:

Standard pre-finish smoothing on bare softwood and hardwood, removing scratch patterns left by 80-grit belt sanders.

๐Ÿ’Ž Best Abrasive Mineral:

Brown Aluminum Oxide, Garnet (ideal for woodworking).

โš ๏ธ The Golden Woodworking Rule: Never skip more than one grit grade in succession (e.g. 80 โž” 120 โž” 180 โž” 220). Skipping too many grits (like jumping directly from 80 to 220) traps deep coarse scratches beneath the fine dust that only become visible after applying wood stain!
