Wine Bottle & Menu Terms Meaning
Staring at a restaurant wine list or grocery bottle? Decode sweetness levels (Brut, Demi-Sec, Dry), mouthfeel (Tannins, Body), and label words (Vintage, Riserva, Sulfites).
Brut
Pronounced: /broot/The international standard for dry sparkling wine and Champagne. It has very little residual sugar, tasting crisp, lively, and refreshing.
Extra Brut
Pronounced: /eks-truh broot/Extremely dry with almost no perceptible sweetness. Clean, mineral, and razor-sharp acidity.
Demi-Sec
Pronounced: /deh-mee sek/Literally means "half-dry" in French, but in reality, it tastes distinctly sweet! Often paired with wedding cakes or desserts.
Dry (Sek)
In wine terminology, "Dry" is the opposite of "Sweet". It means all grape sugars were completely converted into alcohol by yeast during fermentation.
Tannins
Naturally occurring bitter and astringent plant compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and oak barrels. They cause the dry, sandpaper, chalky puckering feeling on your gums and cheeks.
Body (Light vs Full-Bodied)
The perceived weight, richness, and thickness of the liquid in your mouth, determined primarily by alcohol percentage and grape extraction.
Acidity
The crisp, tart, sour sensation that causes your mouth to water and salivate after taking a sip. Gives wine vibrancy and freshness.
Vintage (Year)
The four-digit year printed on the label indicates the exact year the grapes were HARVESTED, not the year the bottle was filled or sold.
Reserve (Riserva / Reserva)
In regulated European countries (Spain, Italy), "Reserva / Riserva" legally mandates extra months or years of aging in oak barrels and cellars before release.
Terroir
Pronounced: /ter-wahr/A French concept describing how a regionโs unique microclimate, soil minerals, slope angle, altitude, and sun exposure impart an identifiable fingerprint flavor to the wine.
Contains Sulfites
Sulfites (sulfur dioxide) are natural antioxidants that prevent wine from turning into brown vinegar. Yeast produces natural sulfites during fermentation, and winemakers add tiny amounts to stabilize bottles for shipping.
