Electrical Wire Colors Meaning

Replacing a light switch, ceiling fan, or outlet? Decode what Black, White, Green, Red, and Brown wires actually do in US (NEC) and UK/European (IEC) systems.

Rule #1 of Electrical DIY: Never Rely on Color Alone!

Previous homeowners or unlicensed contractors may have wired circuits incorrectly or used white wires as hot switch legs without wrapping black tape around them. Always switch off the circuit breaker and test with an inductive non-contact voltage tester probe before touching any copper.

Select Standard:

Black Wire

US (NEC 120V/240V)
120V AC
Hot / LiveDangerous (Lethal Shock Risk)

The primary power wire in standard North American household circuits. It carries electricity directly from the breaker panel to outlets and switches. Never touch without turning off the main breaker!

Where it connects:Standard wall outlets, single-pole light switches, home appliances.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

White Wire

US (NEC 120V/240V)
0V to 5V (Return path)
NeutralShock Hazard (Carries Return Current)

Completes the electrical circuit by returning electricity back to the service panel. Even though it is grounded at the panel, a loose neutral under load can deliver a serious electric shock.

Where it connects:Connected to the silver screw on receptacles and the threaded collar of light sockets.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

Bare Copper / Green Wire

US (NEC 120V/240V)
0V (Earth potential)
Ground (Earth)Safety Ground (Normally 0V)

A life-saving safety mechanism. It directs stray electrical fault currents safely into the physical ground (earth rod) to immediately trip the circuit breaker instead of electrocuting someone touching a metal appliance.

Where it connects:Connected to green ground screw on outlets and metal electrical junction boxes.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

Red Wire

US (NEC 120V/240V)
120V or 240V AC
Secondary Hot / TravelerDangerous (Lethal Shock Risk)

Secondary hot conductor. In 240V circuits (dryers, ovens, water heaters), red provides the opposite 120V phase leg. In 120V circuits, it serves as a traveler wire for 3-way stairway switches or interconnected smoke alarms.

Where it connects:3-way wall switches, ceiling fan wall speed controls, 240V appliances, interconnected hardwired smoke detectors.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

Blue / Yellow Wire

US (NEC 120V/240V)
120V AC
Secondary Hot / TravelerDangerous (Lethal Shock Risk)

Used as traveler wires pulled through metal conduit pipes in commercial or complex residential switch loops.

Where it connects:Conduit wiring, 3-way and 4-way light switches, ceiling fan remote controllers.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

Brown Wire

UK & Europe (IEC 230V)
230V AC
Hot / LiveDangerous (Lethal Shock Risk)

The standard Live (phase) wire across all modern UK and European Union installations (harmonized since 2004). Replaced the old UK red wire.

Where it connects:UK/EU 3-pin plug (connected to right pin marked "L"), wall switches, ceiling roses.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

Blue (UK/EU) Wire

UK & Europe (IEC 230V)
0V (Return path)
NeutralShock Hazard (Carries Return Current)

CRITICAL WARNING: In Europe and the UK, Blue is the NEUTRAL return wire (replaced the old black neutral). In the US, blue is HOT! Never assume blue is harmless without checking geography.

Where it connects:UK/EU 3-pin plug (connected to left pin marked "N").
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

Green & Yellow Striped Wire

UK & Europe (IEC 230V)
0V (Earth)
Ground (Earth)Safety Ground (Normally 0V)

International earth safety wire with dual green and yellow diagonal stripes for colorblind visibility. Connects to metal casings to divert electrical faults.

Where it connects:UK/EU plug top center pin marked "E" or earth symbol โš.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

Red (DC) Wire

DC Low-Voltage (12V/24V)
+12V / +24V DC
DC PositiveLow Voltage

Direct current positive battery lead. In cars, solar panels, and electronics power supplies, red connects to the positive terminal (+).

Where it connects:Car batteries, solar panel strings, LED strip lights, power supplies.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor

Black (DC) Wire

DC Low-Voltage (12V/24V)
0V / Chassis Ground
DC NegativeLow Voltage

FATAL CONFUSION ALERT: In DC circuits, Black is NEGATIVE (Ground)! In US AC household wiring, Black is 120V HOT! Never mix up AC and DC color codes.

Where it connects:Car battery negative terminal, automotive chassis ground, USB and laptop chargers.
Code Standard: NEC Article 200 / IEC 60446Insulated Conductor
